Forest Management Training

Training: Forest Management on Federal Lands

This class is intended for researchers or practitioners who want to learn more about the regulatory and legal policies governing forest management activities on federal lands. Students will also gain tips about working with forest staff to conduct research and how to improve clarity in science communication to relate research topics to federal land management statutes and regulations. The class is spread over three days and will be held during the last daily concurrent NAFEW sessions. Students are expected to attend two of the three classes, presentations during the NAFEW sessions earlier in the day, and either the half-day field trip to Lubrecht or the full-day field trip to the Blackfoot Valley. Tuition to attend the class covers all other NAFEW events. Because presenting is important for improving communication skills and disseminating knowledge, students attending the training are also encouraged to submit abstracts and present during NAFEW sessions.

Day 1, June 23 (2:00 – 3:40): Introduction to the National Forest Management Act (NFMA) and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Learn how these fundamental laws guide all planning and activities on federal lands and gain tips to work effectively with local forest staff to conduct research on federal lands within the confines of NFMA and NEPA.

Day 2, June 24 (3:40 – 5:20): Silviculture for non-silviculturists. Have you often wondered about the terminology used to describe silviculture and fuels activities? These terms matter because they dictate specific actions to adhere to NFMA and NEPA. Learn about silvicultural terms and how using them correctly can increase the impact of your scientific communication and collaboration.

Day 3, June 25 (3:40 – 5:20): Introduction to the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Learn how ESA dictates key components of project planning and land management plans. Learn how to improve communication with forest staff to effectively conduct research on threatened, endangered, and sensitive species or in their habitats.

Registration for the training is available on the main NAFEW registration page and tuition costs are below.
